Hotel Management as career option

Hotel industry involves combination of various skills like management, food and beverage service, housekeeping, front office operation, sales and marketing, accounting. One may pursue courses related to hotel management in degree level or post graduate level to get a lucrative job in hotel industry.

Minimum qualification required to go for a course in hotel management is 10+2. For certificate, diploma and bachelors courses 10+2 is sufficient. There are short term courses and post graduate diplomas which varies from three months to six months ot up to one year.

National level entrances are being held for getting admission into government institutes. Test consists of English, Reasoning, General Science and General Knowledge. The test is followed by interview for admission into reputed institutes. Course areas include food processing, food and beverages service, accommodation operation or front office, hotel accountancy, business communi- cation, hotel engineering, computer, nutrition and food service, hotel laws, principles of management, sales and marketing management, human resource management, etc.

All those who are dreaming to join hotel industry should have a good organizational background, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, strong commitment and self-discipline. Some may get the job without having degrees or diplomas of hotel management but it is always good to have academic qualification related to hotel management.

NCHMCT: National Council for Hotel Management and Catering Technology (Society) was set up in the year 1982 by the Government of India as an autonomous body for coordinated growth and development of hospitality education in the country. Initially, the Council was set up as the National Board of Studies in Food Management, Catering & Nutrition under the administrative control of Ministry of Agriculture (Department of Food) and subsequently transferred to the Ministry of Tourism, Govt. of India in the year 1984. It was rechristened as National Council for Hotel Management & Catering Technology.

ONGC Scholarships: Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited is offering 500 scholarships each worth 48,000 per annum to meritorious SC/ST students. Out of this 50% are reserved for girl students and scholarships are open for studies in India and for Indian nationals only. Candidates should be a student of 1st year of Graduate Engineering or MBBS courses or 1st year of Masters Degree in Geology/ Geophysics or MBA. Candidates should have obtained minimum 60% marks in 12th standard or 60% in graduation. The last date for submission of duly completed application form is 15th November.

Army Education Corps: Applications are invited from male post graduate for the grant of Permanent Commission in the Army Education Corps. Course commencing in July 2016 at Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun. Candidates must pass MA / M Sc with 1st or 2nd Division may apply. Age limit is 23 to 27 years. Last date of applying for the post is 27th October.

123rd Technical Graduate Course: Applications are invited from male engineering graduates for grant of Permanent Commission in the Army in all Arms/Services. 123rd Technical Graduate Course will be commencing from July 2016 at IMA. Last date for sending application is 27th October.
