Imphal, May 22 2018:
In yet another case of crime against women and children in the State, a minor girl was allegedly raped by a 37 year old individual at a location under the jurisdiction of Thoubal PS on May 15.The incident comes at a time when a number of CSOs, student bodies and NGOs working for women rights in the State are staging protest against the increasing number of crimes against women and children.
They have been demanding strict actions against the people involved in such crimes and also to enact a law under which rapists can be awarded capital punishment.
Speaking to media persons, the mother of the minor victim stated that on the night of May 15, her daughter began complaining about pain and burning sensation in her private part but she (the mother) took it lightly as it was very humid that day.
Two days later, the minor again complained about the same problem while they were about to go to sleep.
When the mother checked her daughter, she realised that some thing was not right and the minor revealed that one Thokchom Sanjoy (37) s/o Shyamkumar of Thoubal Leishangthem Thoudam had sexually assaulted her (victim) on May 15 by taking her inside his residence.
The minor revealed she was taken inside the room of the accused and he was sexually assaulted.
She was further warned not to disclose anything regarding the incident or else she would be killed.
The minor disclosed that the accused also threatened her by putting a mask on his face.
The mother claimed that the next day she went to the house of the accused to confront him but 'the wife of the accused and other family members claimed that he was not present in the house at that time.
Later the accused was brought by his family members for holding a meeting regarding the incident but during the meeting the accused adamantly denied committing any kind of sexual assault upon the minor victim.
The mother finally took her minor daughter to the nearest district hospital and there the doctor conveyed that the victim might have been sexually assaulted and asked her (the mother) to lodge a complaint to the police.
After returning from the hospital, she went to the residence of the accused as the medical report suggested instance of sexual assault but she failed to find the accused.
She further claimed that later in the evening (on the same day) the accused and his wife came to her house and the wife began asking her for how much money they (the victim side) want to defame his husband due to which she slapped the wife of the accused.
Accused Sanjoy was also detained and soon after, the local elders and Meira Paibies gathered to settle the issue.
During the meeting, Sanjoy confessed to having committed the heinous crime upon the minor victim, the mother added.
Locals informed police about the incident and soon after the accused was picked up by the police team.
On the next day, medical examinations of the accused and the minor victim were conducted at JNIMS Forensic Sciences Laboratory.
Accused Sanjoy is presently in the custody of Thoubal women PS after he was remanded for eight days by the Special Court POCSO, Thoubal on May 18 under section 6 of POCSO Act (aggravated penetrative sexual assault).
The mother of the minor victim further demanded capital punishment for the accused.
