Inunganbi wins gold in Amman Judo meet

Imphal, August 20 2025: Takhellambam Inungan-bi, who represented India at the Asian Open Judo Championship in Amman, Jordan on August 18 and 19, won the gold medal in below 70 kg category.

It was the first ever gold medal for Inunganbi in an international level competition.

She had earlier won a bronze medal in Commonwealth Judo Championship held in Birmingham, England in 2019 and participated in multiple Asian championships.

At the national level, Inunganbi won gold medal in the 36th National Games in Gujarat in 2022, individual as well as team gold medals in the 37th National Games held in Goa and a silver medal in the 38th National Games held in Uttarkhand in January this year.

Hailing from Tiger Camp village in Imphal East district, Inunganbi is the daughter of Takhellambam Nabakumar and Ibechou Leima.

Inunganbi's father Nabaku-mar told The People's Chronicle over phone that she started playing Judo while studying in Class V in the year 2007 at Khuman Lampak Sports Complex under coach Moirangthem Deben.

From the year 2008 till Class X, Inunganbi got training under National Sports Academy coach Takhellambam Gunamani and then under SAI-SAG coach Sabitri.

Inunganbi was selected in the talent hunt programme of the Bangalore-based JWS-funded Inspire Institute of Sports (IIS) in 2017 and underwent high-performance training, Nabakumar informed.

Nabakumar continued that Inunganbi got 25 days Judo coaching in Japan and later trained at SAI Khelo India centre in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh and these intense trainings helped her daughter win gold medal in the Asian judo championship held recently in Jordan.
