Imphal, April 12 2025: Manipur booked their place in the semifinals of the 15th Hockey India Senior Men National Championship 2025 after a nail-biting penalty shootout victory over Tamil Nadu on Saturday.

Following a tightly contested but goalless stalemate in regulation time, the match went to spot-strokes, where Manipur held their composure to prevail 4-1 .

Both sides had their opportunities in normal play, with Manipur Hockey earning six penalty corners and the Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu securing four, yet neither could break the deadlock.

The defences held firm, and chances went begging in a match that grew increasingly tense as the final whistle approached.

When the shootout arrived, Manipur's precision proved decisive.

Nilakanta Sharma, Waribam Nirajkumar Singh, Kothajit Singh, and Laishram Dipu Singh all converted coolly under pressure, while goalkeeper Ankit Malik emerged as the hero with two vital saves.

Tamil Nadu's sole reply came from Karthi Selvam, as their efforts were repeatedly thwarted by Malik's sharp reflexes.

The result sees Manipur advance to the last four, maintaining their pursuit of national glory.

In the day's other quarterfinal matches, Madhya Pradesh triumphed over Hockey Maharashtra 4-2 in a shootout, while Punjab edged out Hockey Haryana 3-2 in a closely contested match.
