All India Inter SAI Karate Tournament underway; SIC Naharlagun, STC Imphal share 15 gold on Day 1

STC Naharlagun, STC Imphal spiced up title campaign sharing 15 gold medals as the All India Inter SAI Karate Championship-2024 got underway at Indoor Hall, SAI-STC, Khuman Lampak today.
The three day tournament is hosted by Sports Authority of India, North East Regional Centre (SAI-NERC), Imphal.
Athletes across various age groups viz- sub-junior, cadet, junior and senior, and weight categories from four SAI-STCs are in the contention for top honours in Kata and Kumite events.
The programme was formally launched in the presence of L Ibomcha, retd Deputy Director, SAI-STC, Imphal; Maibam Ramani, Centre In-Charge; Laijing L Maring, Assistant Director (P&A), SAI-NERC, Imphal and K Kosana, retd Centre In-Charge, SS&FC, SAI NERC, Imphal and Kirankumar Thangjam, Manipur Amateur Karate-Do Association as dignitaries.
STC Naharlagun are on top of the tally at the end of the day with 8 gold, 4 silver and 1 bronze medals while STC Imphal are second on 7 gold, 4 silver and 3 bronze medals.
Kata
The opening day of the tournament saw Manipur top the Kata tally with as many as 3 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze medals while STC Naharlagun are trailing very closely with 3 gold and 2 silver medals.
STC Jabalpur have also sealed one gold and 2 silver medals as STC Shillong have won 3 silver and 2 bronze medals.
In the sub-junior boys (U-14) Kata event T Naresh of STC Imphal won the gold as Himangshu Roram of STC Naharlagun bagged the silver.
Nabam Sara of STC Naharlagun won the Kata gold for sub-junior girls (U-14) as K Nancy of STC Imphal and Riya Kapoor of STC Shillong settled for the silver and bronze medals.
Meanwhile, the Kata gold for cadet boys went to P Yohenba of STC Imphal as Subash Bagang of STC Naharlagun and Jeremiha of STC Shillong bagged the silver and bronze medals.
Biri Nanu of STC Naharlagun clinched the cadet girls' Kata event as N Saya of STC Imphal and Ananna of STC Jabalpur finished second and third.
Riya Kapoor of STC Jabalpur clinched the junior girls Kata gold finishing ahead of Dapnilahun Wahlang of STC Shillong.
Kh Madhusumita of STC Imphal and Sonia Londa of STC Naharlagun claimed bronze medals in the same category.
Amit Sangdo in the meantime sealed the senior boys' Kata gold to add another gold medal to STC Naharlagun while Paul Danny of STC Shillong and S Ronaldo of STC Imphal settled for the silver and bronze medals.
Yabing Sangdo, meanwhile, claimed the senior girls Kata gold as Rebeka Nongpung of STC Shillong and Kh Madhusumita of STC Imphal settled for the silver and bronze medals.
Kumite
The day also saw STC Naharlagun dominate the kumite event and add 5 gold and 2 silver to their tally as STC Imphal followed closely with 4 gold and 2 silver medals.
T Naresh of STC Imphal defeated Nikki Pappa of STC Naharlagun to win the subjunior -40 kg category gold medal.
STC Naharlagun's Nanung Sangdo (-45 kg), and Paknish Ligu (-50 kg) also won gold medals in their respective categories as their compatriot Paul Londa defeated S Malemnganba of STC Imphal for the sub-junior boys -55 kg category gold.
Jojo Keyang of STC Naharlagun also won the gold medal in the +55 kg category.
W Lucky (-40 kg), Kh Linghel (-50 kg) meanwhile won gold medals in sub-junior girls kumite event as Riya Kapoor of STC Shillong also added a gold medal to their tally beating K Eyorika of STC Imphal in the sub-junior girls -45 kg event.
K Nancy of STC Imphal also won a kumite gold medal by defeating Nido Tirrnia of STC Naharlagun in the subjunior girls -55 kg final before Ilman Khan of STC Naharlagun bagged the -55 kg category gold.
