N Tomchou bags gold at Asian Junior weightlifting championship

Imphal, August 08 2026: Manipur's Nameirakpam Tomchou Meitei won India a gold medal in 60 kg category at the Asian Junior Weightlifting Championship being underway in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

He claimed the Asian Junior Championship title by lifting a combined total of 266 kg (Snatch 116 kg -bronze medal in the segment) and Clean & Jerk 150 kg -a silver medal in the segment) .

His victory was part of a thrilling battle with fellow Indian lifter Gurunaidu Sanapathi, who secured the silver medal with a total lift of 265 kg-just 1 kg behind Tomchou.

Tomchou, who hails from Ngairangbam, Imphal West district had earlier won a gold at the Commonwealth Youth & Junior Championships held this year at Apia, Samoa.

He is a product of Sports Authority of India (SAI) National Centre of Excellence (NCOE) Imphal and had bagged many medals at the State and National competitions.
