Half Marathon marks second day of National Sports Day celebration at MU

A half marathon was successfully conducted as the 3-day National Sports Day celebration being organised by the Department ofPhysical Education and Sports Science (PESS), Manipur University entered the second day.
Notably the 3-day celebration is being organised in collaboration with the Fit India Campaign Committee, Fit India Club and the National Service Scheme (NSS) Cell, Manipur University.
Prof N Lokendra, VC Manipur University; M Premjit, Registrar Manipur University; Prof L Thambal, Head Department of PESS and others attended the programme as dignitaries, said Programme Coordinator.

Following a brief programme where speakers highlighted the importance of the National Sports Day celebration, health benefits of the running, MU VC also flagged off the half marathon that was technically support and coordinated by Dr Y Shantikumar, Dr L Pungding and their team under the arrangement made by Dr Laishram Santosh, NSS Coordinator and Convenor of Fit India Campaign Committee, it said.
Pourimyibe Pame, Elangbam Rakesh, and Yathem Zimik sealed the men's top three honours in the half marathon that started at Traffic Island of the university while Irom Bijaya, Mangsatabam Umelly and Athinin Davis bagged the gold, silver and bronze medals respectively.
The top three runners and following 7 athletes in both the men and women's categories were feted by the dignitaries of the day.
Spastic Society of Manipur celebrates National Sports Day at Takyel
Spastic Society of Manipur, a body affiliated to the Cerebral Palsy Sports Federation of India, also joined in celebrating the National Sports Day.
The 2-day celebration organised by Spastic Society of Manipur came to a close with various sporting events including 100 m, 200 m, 400 m and 4000 m races; shot-put, long-jump, club throw and a friendly football match for cerebral palsy at SAI Sports Complex, Takyelpat.
Speaking at the closing function, secretary of Spastic Society of Manipur, Laishram Tokendra Ricky took note of such an event that also helps people with cerebral palsy join the mainstream celebration of the day.
The sporting event also act as a platform to showcase and enhance the skill of the participants, he added.
Food Safety Administration
The Food Safety Administration, Manipur under the Health Department also celebrated the National Sports Day today at Chumthang Sannapung to commemorate the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand.
The programme was organised to promote fitness and healthy lifestyle in line with PM Modi's call to reduce oil intake by 10 percent as a step towards tackling obesity and lifestyle related health issues.
On the occasion, awareness messages on safe food, balanced diets, and FSSAI's "Eat Right India" initiative were shared.
The participants also took a pledge to adopt healthier eating practices along with the Fit India pledge, reinforcing the spirit of "Har Gali, Har Maidan, Khele Saara Hindustan".
The day's event began with Dr Chambo Gonmei, Director of Health Services kicking off an exhibition football match.
Other sporting events including badminton, 100 m race, tug of war, and carrom followed with enthusiastic participation from officials, staff and local youth, said a statement of the Food Safety Administration.
Prizes were also distributed to the participants, it added.
