Bakshi memorial football tourney begins

The 19th Bakshi Memorial Football tournament organised by 36 Assam Rifles in collabo ration with Pherzawl District Football Association kicked off Monday at Mini stadium, Parbungin Pherzawl district.
The tournament is organised every year since 2007 in memory of the supreme sacrifice made by Lt Col Rajeev Bakshi, a Sena medal (posthumous).
Lt Col Rajeev Bakshi laid down his life while fighting insurgents in Manipur on January 20, 2006 .
In order to commemorate and preserve valiant, selfless and gallant act of Lt Col Rajeev Bakshi, people of Parbung decided to organise Bakshi Memorial Football Tournament on his death anniversary every year since 2007 .
Meanwhile, a release of the 36 Assam Rifles said Lt Col Rajeev Bakshi of 13 Dogra, a true soldier, warrior and an exemplary officer of Indian Army, sacrificed his life for the country in the highes't tradition of the Indian Army.
He displayed exemplary courage, dedication and selfless trait of an officer during a gunfight which ensued on the fateful day on January 20, 2006."Lt Col Rajeev Bakshi is no more, yet his sacrifice, love and dedication for the people of Parbung and the surrounding areas will always be etched in the minds of the people.
As his last words to his soldiers were 'Try to avoid civilian casualty' itself is symbolic of his demeanour as a soldier who loved the people of Parbung," the release added.
