Manipur Olympic Games to feature 34 sports, says MOA secretary

Imphal, July 18 2022: Manipur Olympic Association (MOA) secretary, Sunil Elangbam has said thatpreparations are in full swing for the Manipur Olympic Games.

He was addressing a press conference here at MOA's conference hall.

In the press conference which was also attended by key office bearers of the apex sporting body, Sunil Elangbam expressed gratitude to the Chief Minister for approving the proposal budget presented ahead of the Manipur Olympic Games planned to be held from August 26 to 30, 36th National Games due to be held from September 27 to October 10 in Gujarat and 2nd North East Olympic Games due to be held from October 30 to November 6 in Shillong.

He also lauded the Chief Minister for the recent Government order which hiked the diet allowance of athletes from Rs 200 to 500 as promised back in 2018 .

Sunil further said that the proposed Manipur Olympic Games will see athletes from 16 districts compete in 34 different sports disciplines; He also added that each district will be allowed to host sports disciplines this time.

Sports disciplines like Mukna, Kabaddi and Kho-Kho have -been assigned to Thoubal district; Canoeing and Kayaking and Rowing have been assigned to Bishnupur district etc, he said.

He went on to say that Judo and Volleyball will be hosted in Mayang Imphal, Handball at Chingarel, Basketball at Nahabam Basketball court, Golf at IGAR (S) complex at Mantripukhri, Squash and Racket at St Anthony School- Chingmeirong, Tennis at Officers' Club-Lamphelpat Kang at Khuman Lampak Kangshang, Equestrian events at Mapal Kangjeibung, Athletics at Khuman Lampak Main Stadium.

Cycling will be held at Cycling Velodrome, Khuman Lampak; Gymnastics at Indoor Stadium, Khuman Lampak; Archery, Fencing, Karate-Do, Wushu and Weightlifting at SAI, Takyelpat; Shooting at Khuman Lampak Shooting Range; Taekwondo at NSA Khuman Lampak; Boxing at Boxing Arena Khuman Lampak, Football at Turf Ground, Khuman Lampak and SAI Takyel ground; Hockey at Hockey Stadium Khuman Lampak; Netball, Swimming, Triathlon, Wrestling in Khuman Lampak; Badminton and Table Tennis at Indoor Hall, DM College Campus and Polo at Iroishemba Kangjeibung, he added.

Sunil Elangbam also noted that preparations are under for formation of district committees for successful organisation of the State event besides constituting technical committee, Game organising committee and others.

On being asked about the absence of district Olympic associations and sports associations and challenges likely to be caused by it, Sunil stated Manipur Olympic Association will look to curb such challenges at its best level.
