Governor fetes, veteran athletes, National Games gold medallists as Manipur celebrates Shannaroishingee Numit

Imphal, February 25 2025:
Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, today, graced the celebration of Shannaroishingee Numit (Players' Day) held at the Indoor Stadium, Khuman Lampak Sports Complex in Imphal.
The Governor felicitated 6 veteran sportspersons of the State who brought laurels, not only for the State but also for the Nation.
The veteran athletes include Soram Lokeshwor (athletics), Leishangthem Ajit (athletics), RK Sanayaima (football), Santi (Football), Paphulung Kabui (football) and Bimol (badminton).
The gold medallists of the recently concluded 38th National Games (Uttarakhand) including triathlete S Athouba, who won two gold medals, were feted with Rs 3 lakh each (for one gold medal) .

Speaking at the event, the Governor said, "The day is being observed in recognition of the dedication and hard work of our sportspersons and to encourage the spirit of sportsmanship that defines the athletic community of Manipur" .
He further said, with a proud history of producing world-class athletes, the State has been consistently at the forefront of sporting excellence in many sports disciplines.
The State has earned the well-deserved title of the "Sports Hub of India", he said.
Highlighting the initiative to develop sporting talents at grassroots level, he said, the Government has decided to develop playgrounds in all the villages of Manipur under the 'Khungang Ama Sanabung Ama' scheme.
The Department of Youth Affairs & Sports has been implementing a coaching programme named � Regular Coaching Centre (RCC), in 24 sports disciplines since 2002, he noted.
He continued that the Government is committed to provide world-class sports facilities, quality training to the youths of the State.
The Government of India has set up the National Sports University which aims to promote sports education in the areas of sports sciences, sports technology, sports medicine, sports journalism, sports management, sports coaching, etc, he said.
The Governor also congratulated all the medal winners, participants, coaches, trainers, sports officials, and parents of the players who have played a vital role in shaping the careers of the athletes.
The event was organised by the Department of Youth Affairs & Sports.
Chief Secretary, Prashant Kumar Singh and Kshetrimayum Thoiba Singh, Olympian were among others who attended the event.
Prashant Kumar Singh also captivated the gathering by delivering the presidential speech of the programme in Manipuri language.
In his speech, he expressed happiness to be a part of the event celebrating the remarkable legacy of Manipur in the field of sports and honouring the dedication, perseverance and achievements of the State players.
He also acknowledged State's rich tradition of consistently producing world class athletes including 19 Olympians, 23 Arjuna Awardees, 3 Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Awardees among others.
He also took note of the unwavering support the Government has been extending towards nurturing sports talents through various coaching, financial assistance programmes and provision for jobs to world class athletes.
He also extended congratulations to the State athletes who brought home medals from the recently held Uttarakhand National Games.
