20th Governor's Cup State Level Fencing Championship begins

Imphal, August 22 2024: The 20th edition of Governor's Cup State Level Fencing Championship-2024 kicked off today at YAS Fencing Hall, Khuman Lampak Sports Complex this afternoon under the aegis of the Manipur Fencing Association.

The championship was formally opened in the presence of M Lokendro, former president, Manipur Fencing Association; S Pritamkumar, president, Manipur Fencing Association; L Anita, Assistant Director, Youth Affairs and Sports Department among others as dignitaries.

Speaking at the occasion, former president of the association M Lokendro spoke on India's performance at the recently concluded Paris Olympic Games.

It was saddening to see India return without a gold medal when a small island Nation like Taiwan secured two gold medals to finish better in the medal tally, he said while stressing on the need of reviewing India's performance.

He also expressed hope that the championship opened today will help produce world class fencers from the State.

The opening day of the championship saw S Hemash seal senior men's foil gold medal beating L Tomba of Thoubal.

Imphal West's K Denny and O Dinesh settled for the bronze medal.

O Yubaraj of Imphal East defeated compatriot L Moramba in the sabre final to win another gold medal for the district as S Biju of Ukhrul and Th Maxi of Imphal East settled for the bronze medals.

S Nency Rose of Thoubal in the meantime claimed the senior women's epee gold medal defeating Bidyapati of Imphal East in the final today.

S Kiranbala of Thoubal and Oshini K of Imphal West received bronze medals in this competition.

The championship will conclude on August 26 .
