Imphal, August 08 2026: Sapam David ended the gold medal drought for Manipur at the 42nd Sub Junior National Aquatics Championships 2026 by topping the 100 m butterfly event on Day 3 in Jaipur.

David, having settled for silver medals on the opening day (August 6) in the 200 m freestyle and 50 m butterfly events for Boys-II, clinched the 100 m butterfly event gold by finishing the course in 59.50 seconds.

He also won a silver medal in the 400 m freestyle competition with a time of 4:16.86 (4 minutes and 16.86 seconds) today to swell Manipur's tally to 1 gold, 6 silver and 2 bronze medals.

The day also saw Laitonjam Punghen clock 1:05.18 in the 100 m butterfly event to settle for the silver medal as the Boys' Group II medley relay team comprising Koijam Athoiba, David Sapam, Leishangthem Bishorjit and Nongmaithem Dhananjoy settled for a silver medal.

Earlier on Day 1, David Sapam opened the State's medal account by winning a silver medal in the 200 m freestyle event with a time of 2:02.82 .

Abdul Hafeez of Tamil Nadu was the best in the event as he clocked 1:59.26 while Shreyas Sunil of Karnataka registered 2:03.08 to settle for the bronze medal.

David also finished second in the 50m Butterfly event for BOYS - II to win a silver medal in 27.12 seconds as S Krish of Karnataka took 27.05 seconds to win the gold and Sumit Mondal of Bengal claimed the bronze in 27.31 seconds .

Yesterday, Laitonjam Punghen stretched the silver medal tally for Manipur by finishing second in the 200m Medley for Boys-III .

He was second in 2:31.75 as Daniel Emmanuel Saldanha of Karnataka clocked 2:31.40 to win the gold and Yuvraj of Delhi finished third in 2:35.09 .

Koijam Athoiba Singh meanwhile clocked 26 seconds to win a bronze medal in the 50m Freestyle event for BOYS - II as S Krish of Karnataka bagged the gold in 25.19 seconds and Akeel Ansar of Bengal took 25.36 seconds to seal the silver medal.

The second bronze medal came in the 4 x 100m Freestyle event for BOYS - II with Mangalsana Thangjam, Leishangthem Bishorjit Singh, David Sapam, Koijam Athoiba Singh posting a time of 3:52.41 .

Tamil Nadu team comprising Sudhan P, Monish Naidu Prabhu, A P Arya Sathar, Abdul Hafeez took 3:46.08 to win the gold as Karnataka's quartet of Amith H Pavan, Jas Singh, Shreyas Sunil and S Krish claimed the silver in 3:46.91 .
