Imphal, July 30 2024:
The Village Volunteer Force, (VVF), Manipur has appealed to all local clubs, meira paibi organisations and the people to detain those who demand or ask money in their name and hand them over to police.
Addressing the media at Canchipur today, spokesperson of VVF Yumnam Jiban said that they are a legitimate voluntary group formed to protect Meetei villages and its residents in the wake of the violent crisis in Manipur.
He also said that extortion, kidnapping people for ransom, firing on residential places and disrupting marup (a rotating credit system) are not on their agenda.
Saying that they have come across reports of some groups of people demanding money from Government departments and educational institutions in their name apart from seeking donation from commuters along different routes, Jiban added that a report of appointment of army chief of VVF, Manipur has also been doing the rounds.
Saying that VVF is not involved in extortion and they have no army chief, he continued that VVF only has unit commanders to look after their respective camps.
He said that VVF, however, took some donations from the people in the past while training its volunteers.
Appealing to the people to inform the police if any group or individual demands money in their name so that legal action can be taken against them, Jiban added that people will distrust those who come out to protect the State and her people if armed people extort money by taking advantage of the unrest in Manipur.
