Imphal, June 28 2025: The Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), Porompat has become a model comprehensive abortion care (CAC) centre.

The event, launching the CAC centre, was organised at the hospital by the Maternal Health Division, State Health Society, National Health Mission, Institute of Social Research Development (ISRD) and JNIMS Hospital.

Health Services Manipur Director Dr Chambo Gonmei, JNIMS Director Dr L Usharani, Family Welfare Services Director Dr N Hemantakumar Singh, JNIMS Medical Superintendent Dr Kh Lokeshwar Singh, Maternal Health Advisor Dr Meena Seram, SNO Maternal Health Dr Achuina Golmei, Imphal East CMO Dr L Indira Devi and former Head of Department of OBGY Dr Thangjam Netajini Devi attended the launch event.

At the occasion, Dr Chambo Gonmei said the comprehensive abortion care centre at JNIMS is second in Manipur, and the State is second in the North-East to have opened such centres after Assam.

Maternal Health Advisor, Dr Meena Seram said unsafe and unauthorised abortion may lead to complications harming pregnant women and even cause death.

Not any doctor can practice abortion, other than a registered and trained practitioner of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, she added.

Approximately eight women die each day in India due to complications from unsafe abortions.

Therefore, it is highly important that pregnant women seek care and abortion at comprehensive abortion care centres, said Dr L Indira, CMO Imphal East.
