Imphal, March 26 2026:
Unknown miscreants vandalized a Panthong (wooden gate) built by the villagers at the entry of Waithou Phunal Maring Village in Keirao Assembly Constituency on the night of March 23 .
As part of the Maring community's tradition, the Panthong was constructed recently in connection with the solemnization of the first "Lamta Thangja" of 2026 in the village.
Condemning the incident, P Meba Maring, Village Chairman, asserted that the act of vandalizing the Panthong may sow seeds of hatred between different indigenous communities.

Stating that the ceremonial construction of a Panthong has been carried out annually since the days of their ancestors, the Village Chairman said the incident has caused grief to the entire Maring community.
The act of vandalising the Panthong appears to be targeted and intentional, he added.
Seeking the help of CSOs to look into the unfortunate incident, he said the Panthong built at the entry point of the village was a symbolic representation of a Maring community living here.
He denounced the March 23 incident as an affront to the Maring people and their customs, adding that such acts should not be repeated in the future.
According to A Meynai Maring, caretaker of Phunal Maring Village King Telheiba's residence, the Maring community has observed the tradition of building a Panthong at the village entry point on the first Saturday of Lamta from the days of their forefathers, similar to the Lamta Thangja ritual observed by the Meiteis.
Sharing that the Panthong will be rebuilt by the villagers, Phunal Maring Village Authority secretary Thangja Yaima Maring has appealed against repeating such acts of vandalism in the future.
