Court remands 'drug peddler' to police custody

Imphal, September 24 2026: The Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM), Imphal West, today remanded a 39-year-old alleged drug peddler to 12 days of police custody after he was arrested with 1.105 kg of brown sugar at Lilong Chajing Mamang Leikai along National Highway-102 (Imphal-Moreh road) yesterday afternoon.

The accused, identified as Abdul Majid (39), son of Najir Ali of Kyamgei Muslim Takhok Makha, was produced before the Court by a team of Singjamei police station, which sought 12 days' police custody remand.

What the prosecution says

The Assistant Public Prosecutor (APP) for the State submitted that information was received by Patsoi Police and a BSF field team in Imphal yesterday morning that some suspected drug peddlers were planning to exchange contraband items in the Patsoi area.

Accordingly, a joint team of Patsoi Police and BSF waited in the Langjing area.

Later, information was received that the suspected drug peddlers had diverted their route towards National Highway-102.Following this, the joint team proceeded towards Singjamei and conducted frisking and checking at Lilong Chajing Mamang Leikai.

During the checking, the accused was intercepted while riding a two-wheeler bearing a Manipur registration number from Lilong towards Imphal.

He was found moving in a suspicious manner.

On checking the vehicle, the team found a black polythene packet containing suspected contraband.

The accused was arrested on the spot and the brown sugar weighing 1.105 kg including the weight of the polythene, was seized following due formalities in the presence of the Mobile Forensic Unit, Imphal West.

During preliminary interrogation, the accused admitted to the charge.

After hearing the submission of the APP and perusing the case records, the Court remanded the accused to police custody for 12 days, till October 5, for further investigation.
