Man gets 10 years RI for sexual assault

A 52 year old man has been sentenced to 10 years rigorous imprisonment under Section 6 of POCSO Act for committing sexual assault on a minor girl on May 12, 2019 somewhere in Imphal West district under Singjamei police station.
Fast Track Special Court No 1 Judge RK Memcha convicted Mayengbam Inao (50) s/o (L) Kulla of Pishum Oinam Leikai, staying at Ningombam Mayai Leikai at the time of the incident, on June 21, 2025 after the trial of the case and fixed the sentence hearing today to announce the quantum of punishment.
The convict was produced before the same Court today for sentence hearing from Manipur Central Jail, Sajiwa.
Special PP A Nilachandra submitted that the convict committed a heinous crime against a minor child and did not show any human mercy and deserved maximum punishment laid down by the law.
Because of such acts of the convict, parents of any child will have no confidence in allowing their children to be with any relatives, and prayed for awarding exemplary punishment to the convict which would also send a message to the society.
On the other hand, the defence counsel of the convict submitted that the convict is now 52 years old having a wife and two children and the convict's wife is a simple housewife who is managing the entire family by weaving.
It was also submitted that the convict used to sell second hand clothes in the Imphal area to maintain his family and now is remorseful of his act and swears in the name of the God that he will not repeat such acts in the future.
The defence counsel submitted that considering the future prospects of the convict's children prayed that Mayengbam Inao be awarded minimum punishment.
The defence counsel also prayed to set off a period six years and one month from the imprisonment period which the convict had already undergone in connection with the present case.
The Court, after hearing the submission of the Special PP and the defence counsel of the convict, sentenced Mayengbam Inao to undergo rigorous imprisonment of 10 years and pay a fine Rs 5,000 and in default of payment of the fine, convict has to undergo another three months of simple imprisonment.
The Court also ordered that the period which the convict had already undergone in judicial custody be set off from the sentence of imprisonment.
Considering the trauma suffered by the victim and the need for necessary rehabilitation, treatment and financial circumstances of the family members of the minor victim, the Court directed the State Government to provide a compensation of Rs four lakh to the victim and her family from the Victim Compensation Fund or other schemes or funds established under section 357-A CrPC within 30 days from the receipt of the same order.
