Tongjei Maril road work on in full swing

Imphal, June 23 2016: Construction of the 89.52 Kms long Tongjei Maril road which connects Bishnupur with Rengpang has been completed by almost 90 per cent and the same construction work is going on in full swing as the same work is targeted for completion by March next year.

Bishnupur-Joujangtek section (20 Kms) is being constructed by ABCI Company under the sponsorship of Asian Development Bank (ADB).

Construction work of the Joujangtek-Rengpang section (69.53 Kms) is funded by NEC and it is being executed by Hyderabad based Keystone Infra Pvt Ltd.

The total estimated cost of the road project is Rs 92.25 crore and around Rs 43 crore has been spent so far.

A team of media persons went from Bishnupur to Rengpang and made a field assessment of the road construction work yesterday.

Whereas the work order was issued on June 12, 2014, construction work of the road started in October 2014 .

Speaking to the media team, Keystone Infra Pvt Ltd Chief Operating Officer Uday Kumar said that the road construction work requires cutting of hill slopes for 70 Kms out which 30.62 Kms have been completed so far.

Cutting of hill slopes for another 5 Kms is going on presently.

With an aim to complete cutting of hill slopes by next month, the same work is being done on a war-footing.

After around 30 Kms have been black topped in Penjang area, the same work has been suspended due to rainfall.

A new machine (stone crusher) known as Kleemann which can grind 250 tonnes of stones into pebbles of different sizes is utilized in constructing the road.

This is the first time such a machine has been used in the entire North East region, Uday Kumar said.

Around 500 people are engaged in the road construction work and they are divided into four camps.

NEC II Assistant Engineer Thoudam Oken said that people of around 15 to 20 villagers would be benefited once the road construction work is completed.

He said that the work was making good progress because of the cooperation extended by people settled along the road.

He informed that due processes have been initiated for construction of a 50 metres long RCC bridge over Leimatak river and another RCC bridge of length 65 metres across Irang river.

If the present momentum can be maintained, construction of the road as well as the bridges can be fully completed by March next year although the target set for the project is July 2017, Oken added.
