2nd round of National Deworming Day launched

Imphal, September 22 2026: The second round of National Deworming Day 2026 was launched today under the aegis of the Directorate of Health Services and State Health Society, NHM Manipur at IMA Hall, Lamphel.

Health Director Dr N Hemantakumar, Family Welfare Services Director Dr N Bino, Education (Hills) Additional Director Manglem Gonmei, NHM Manipur Child Health State Nodal Officer Dr A Sylvia attended the launch function as chief guest, president and guests of honour respectively.

Speaking at the occasion, Dr A Sylvia said that the National Deworming Day is generally observed once a year across the country but it is observed twice in some States including Manipur where worm infection rate is high.

The first round of National Deworming Day 2026 was held in the month of March.

The programme implemented under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is aimed at protecting children between one year and 19 years from being infected by the soil transmitted worm known as Helminths, Dr Sylvia said.

Infection by Helminths often causes anaemia leading nutritional deficiencies to stunted physical growth and brain development, she said.

This disease can be easily prevented by taking Albendazole, prescribed by the World Health organization (WHO), she said.

The State Nodal Officer added that the deworming programme would cover as many as 8,96,317 children across the State in the age group of 1-19 .
