Jiri IDPs briefly return

Jiribam, August 21 2024:
At least 18 internally displaced people (IDPs) from the Hmar community inspected their residential places at Kalinagar in Jiribam under tight security measures today.
The displaced Hmar people were allowed to inspect their homes as part of the measure being taken up to facilitate the resettlement of internally displaced people (IDPs) from Jiribam.
They stayed at their places at Kalinagar for 2 hours (from 9 am to 11 am) before returning to Cachar again where they are taking refuge.
Of the 18 people who returned to their places, though briefly today, 13 were women and five men including All Jiribam Tribal Union (AJTU) president Remkung Hmar.
To ensure their safety, the 18 Hmar people were escorted by Central and State police personnel led by Jiribam Senior SP M Pradip Singh, SDPO T Inaobi Singh and Officer in Charge Sagapam Ibotombi.
It may be mentioned that representatives from Meetei and Hmar communities of Jiribam had convened two meetings recently to restore normalcy in the district.
Speaking to the media on the sideline, Remkung Hmar thanked the CRPF and Jiribam police for letting them stay at their houses for 2 hours.
He exuded confidence that the authority concerned will expedite the process to rehabilitate them.
It is reported that some displaced families from Jiribam have already returned to their places and measures are underway to resettle more IDPs.
