Hailstorm affected villagers demand swiff action from Govt

Villagers affected by the May 5 hailstorm in Thoubal district have demanded swift action from the State Government in providing relief measures.
Devastated by the May 5 hailstorm, locals of Kairembikhok under Wangjing Tentha AC in Thoubal district have urged the State Government to release a special economic package for the village to help the residents return to their normal lives.
Laishram Norendro, a resident of Kairembikhok Awang Leikai who suffered significant damage to property as a result of the storm, made the appeal today during a press conference held at Kairembikhok.
Stating that the small village comprises roughly 700 households, he lamented that every single household has been affected by the hailstorm.
70% of the village population make their living through carpentry.
But due to the recent hailstorm, many of their wood working equipments used in making beds, almirahs etc have been lost.
On top of hundreds of homes, many workshops were also destroyed, said Norendro.
Urging the State Government to release the already promised relief aid to the affected families, Laishram Norendro further appealed for a special economic package for the families of Kairembikhok.
He also called for the concerned SDO to visit the village and conduct a survey of the widespread devastation wreaked by the storm.
Separately, a press conference was held at Wangjing under Thoubal district today demanding immediate distribution of relief materials to the families affected by the hailstorm in Wangjing, Lamding, Uyal Wangbal and Khangabok.
Speaking to media persons, Oinam Thoibi from Lamding said that locals of Wangjing, Lamding, Uyal Wangbal and Khangabok are facing immense hardships as a result of the storm.
Rs 6.90 crore has been sanctioned as disaster relief, but no monetary or material aid have reached the victims, she asserted.
Drawing the attention of the Government on this issue, she urged the administration to distribute relief materials to the affected families at the earliest considering the plights of these people amid these challenging times.
