'Understanding one's culture need of the hour'

Imphal, January 13 2018: Stating that lack of respect among the different communities and underestimating each others' values result in conflict and enmity among the people, president of NPF, Manipur Awangbow Newmai made an observation that promoting respect among the communities and understanding one' cultures and traditions is the need ofhour in order to bring peace and development in the State.

He was speaking as the chief guest at the valedictory function of the Inpui Karing Ngei 2018 held today at Haochong sub-division of Tamenglong district.

Awangbou who is also the MLA of Tamei AC called upon the communities of the State to preserve their own cultures and traditions.

He said that one must understand that every community whether small or large is God's creation and therefore it must be considered valuable.

Maintaining that the N Biren Singh-led coalition Government is working for the welfare and prosperity of the people irrespective of caste and religion, Awangbow appealed to all the communities to cooperate with the Government in its endeavours.

He further appealed to all the students belonging to different communities, to make a firm commitment for uplifting their own cultures when they become deserving persons.

Phungyar AC MLA, K Leishiyo said that many youngsters feel following their cultures and traditions as a burden and even feel shame in wearing their traditional attires.

He termed the individuals who forget their genesis as confused people and urged all the tribal people to revive and promote their own cultures.

Noting that the lives of the tribal people in the State are closely linked with the forests, he pointed out that tribal life would vanish if they don't attempt to preserve the forests.

He underscored the importance of documenting the histories, cultures, traditions and other values of tribal people, saying ignorance of this aspect in the past has affected the tribal people of the State in many ways.

ICHAM rounder president N Rajendro conveyed that the indigenous people of the State are lagging far behind as compared to people of other States in terms of education and the key posts of Government services in the State are being held by people coming from outside the State.

He called upon the people of the hills to give importance on education and groom meritorious students/children besides giving extra emphasis on religion and culture.

Linguist Dr Th Chandramani, ANSAM president Seth Shatsang and NWUM president Asha Wungnam seated on the dais.

Various cultural dances performances by cultural troupes from Inpui community and other tribal communities marked the main event of the valedictory programmes.

Notably, Inpui Karing Ngei is celebrated to signify unity with a broad vision to revisit and revive Inpui history, culture and tradition.

It is termed as a festival of living emphasising the socio-economy and religious life of Inpui community.
