Imphal, June 11 2024:
The Jiribam Students' Forum, Imphal has submitted a 7-point memorandum to Chief Minister N Biren Singh urging him to bring back the displaced people to their homes and stop "population transfer" taking place in Jiribam.
Instead of providing security in the Meitei settlements in Jiribam, Central security forces like the Assam Rifles are engaging in transfer of population leaving their homes and properties unattended and vulnerable to attacks and arson, said the student forum in the memorandum.
Violence that followed the brutal murder of Soibam Sarat by suspected Kuki militants in Jiribam on June 6 has displaced around 528 Meiteis.
Around 72 Meitei houses, police and VDF outposts and a Forest checkpost have been burnt at Jiribam by armed Kuki militants.
Through the memorandum, the forum urged the Government to immediately arrest Gousanga of Phaitol village and those who were involved in the murder of S Sarat.
It said the Government must take up stringent action as per law against armed Kukis who burnt down houses in Borobekra sub-division.
People who have been displaced from Borobekra, Boroikhal, Babukhal, Motbung, Leishabithol must be brought back and provided adequate security for their safety, it said.
The memorandum further stressed that the Central security forces including Assam Rifles must stop transfer of population from vulnerable Meitei settlements.
Instead of moving the people, adequate security forces should be deployed for the safety and security of the settlements and the people as a whole.
No population should be moved, it said.
Jiribam District Hospital doesn't have adequate infrastructure, doctors and nurses.
The Government must send adequate staff and equipment to the hospital to enable it to treat patients efficiently amid the violence that has hit the district, said the forum.
It also urged the Government to open and allow free movement on Imphal-Jiribam and operate helicopter service six days a week.
