Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal West has released two accused persons on bail in a murder case.
The two accused, Suman Debnath (24) and Shubham Sarkar (22) were arrested along with the main accused Khongbantabam Bishnachandra in connection with the death of Rajiv Thokchom of Singjamei Thokchom Leikai on April 30 last.
Rajiv was hit and run over by a four-wheeler vehicle, driven by Khongbantabam Bishnachandra after a quarrel broke out between them.
Bishnachandra hails from Uripok Tourangbam Leikai.
While the main accused, Bishnachandra was released on bail by Session Court Imphal West on July 15, the bail plea of the two other accused were heard yesterday by the CJM Imphal West.
Two separate bail applications were filed before the Court by the counsels of accused Suman Debnath and Shubham Sarkar.
Suman Debnath and Shubham Sarkar hail from West Bengal and they were staying at Uripok Tourangbam Leikai.
In the Court yesterday, the defence counsels submitted that the two accused are daily wage earners who were earning livelihood by working as electricians in Imphal area.
The counsels submitted that the accused are innocent and they have been falsely implicated in the case.
There is no substantial materials to support the charges levelled against them.
Moreover, the accused have no personal relation with the main accused Khongbantabam Bishnachandra.
The two were doing electrical works at the house of the Bishnachandra, said the counsels.
Further, the two accused persons did not know the victim and had no role whatsoever in the commission of the crime, said the counsels praying the Court for releasing them on bail.
The Court, after hearing the submission of the prosecutor and the defence counsels, observed that the accused persons have spent more than 90 days in judicial custody (since May 5, 2025) and they are entitled to default bail as chargesheet against them has not been submitted till date.
The Court then ordered the release of the accused persons on bail with a bond of Rs 1 lakh each and sureties of like amount.
