Imphal, August 09:
Even though no serious case of ragging had been reported from the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in the past an anti-ragging squad has been set-up to ensure such ugly incident do not occur in the future.
Decision to set up the squad with Professor Ksh Kala as the chairman is informed to have been taken some days back at a special meeting.
According to RIMS media advisor L Iboyaima the concept of setting up the anti-ragging squad is to check ragging of freshers and bring about a congenial atmosphere and exuded confidence such a measure could prevent unruly scenes at the premier medical institute of the region.
Conceding that there had been instances of 'mild ragging' by the seniors against fresh entrants in the institute in the past, Iboyaima disclosed that ragging cases in RIMS include forcing freshers to wear distinctive colours of socks for boys whereas it is ribbons of varied colours for the girls.
Insisting that rules framed at the said meeting will thwart all sorts of suppressive acts, he explained that freshers attending classes in uniform approved by the Institute is a must as was decided at the meeting with the freshers also required to report immediately to the hostel warden any case of ragging.
Cautioning that senior students indulging in unwanted practices (ragging) will be punished accordingly including possible expulsion from RIMS, he maintained that RIMS authorities are very firm that they would not tolerate disruption of academic atmosphere.
The RIMS will be celebrating its 37th foundation anniversary on September 14 .
