Imphal, January 08 2011:
In what could be described as a shocking outcome, the ruling Indian National Congress nearly suffered a complete rout as five independents were elected to the Thoubal Municipal Council, having seven seats.
With only two Congress councillors elected to the seven-member Thoubal Municipal Council at the end of counting of all the municipal council election today, non-Congress party candidates emerged victorious in the Municipal Councils of Bishnupur, Ningthoukhong and Mayang Imphal, while honours were shared in Jiribam.
The loss in the Thoubal Municipal Council is significant in the sense that the Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh's assembly constituency falls within Thoubal district and Congress party was expected to be runaway victors.
On completion of the counting process of all the eight municipal councils, eight independent candidates got elected to the Mayang Imphal Municipal Council compared to five Congress nominees while in Bishnupur Municipal Council independents bagged maximum of eight seats followed by the Congress at three and one going to the MPP.

however, Congress nominees came out triumphantly in the municipal councils of Nambol, Moirang and Kakching.
Moreover, counting of 13 Nagar Panchayats out of the total of 18 that went to the polls simultaneously with the Municipal council elections have also been completed with the Congress facing total rout in Oinam Nagar Panchayat.
NCP claimed seven seats with two going to independents.
On the otherhand, the Congress claimed one seat in Lilong Nagar Panchayat (Imphal West) and two in Thongkhong Lakhsmi Nagar Panchayat.
Results of Samurou, Yairipok, Shikhong Sekmai, Heirok and Wangjing Lamding Nagar Panchayats are yet to be finalised till the time of filing this report.
