MU hosts workshop on social inclusion

An international workshop on "Sustainability, Inequality and Social Inclusion" was held today at Manipur University's Court Hall under the aegis of the Centre for Study of Social Inclusion, MU and Maharaja Bodhchandra College.
School of Social Sciences, MU Dean Prof Memcha Loitongbam, Centre for Study of Social Inclusion, MU Director Prof H Sudhirkumar, University of Bath, UK Economics Professor Shashi Nandeibam and MB College Principal Dr Bhabananda Singh attended the inaugural session as chief guest, president and guests of honour respectively.
Speaking at the inaugural session, Prof Memcha Loitongbam said that the terms 'sustainability', 'inequality' and 'social inclusion' are all big concepts and they are interrelated.
The United Nations has its sustainable development goals.
"Sustainability is not our choice but a necessity", she said.
Likewise 'inequality' and 'social inclusion' may be studied separately or all the three terms may be studied together, Prof Memcha said.
The workshop will provide a perfect platform for a comprehensive academic discourse on the three terms and come up with pragmatic recommendations, she continued.
Later, the topic of the workshop was deliberated in two plenary sessions.
In the first session, Deputy Head of Department, Department of Economics & Institute of Sustainability and Climate Change, University of Bath Dr Lucy O' Shea presented a paper titled "Assessing the role of circular economy within the context of Manipur with particular emphasis on Imphal".
Three resource persons presented papers in each of the two sessions.
