MLA shocked over 'missing' water project

Imphal, January 07 2011: Expressing resentment over absence water supply facility in Shangkumai village although the Government has claimed that such facility had already been provided on the paper some years back, MLA of Tadubi A/C K Raina has directed all concerned to investigate into the matter.

The matter came to light when the people of the village located around 32 kms along Parel road from Maram Centre of National Highway 39 handed over a memorandum to the MLA who participated in the formal inauguration of a wind solar hybrid power project at Shangkumai as chief guest.

Formal inauguration of the power project was held today although power connection has already been provided to the villagers as Christmas and New Year gift by MANIREDA since December 23 .

Presided over by Commissioner of Science and Technology H Imocha, the inaugural function was also attended by Deputy Commissioner of Senapati district Nidhi Kesharwani, Director of MANIREDA L Manglem and Director of Science and Technology UC Laishram as guests of honour.

Taking advantage of the august gathering of dignitaries, the villagers submitted a memorandum to the chief guest highlighting the difficulties being faced on account of absence of water supply.

Making reference to the memorandum in his speech, MLA K Raina observed that absence of water supply scheme in the village despite the claim of the Government that the facility has already been extended some years back is unfortunate.

Expressing unhappiness over the matter, the MLA directed the village authority to find out who else were involved in the scheme and are behind diversion of the fund.

He also asked the Deputy Commissioner of Senapati district to sought an explanation from the officials concerned of the Department in the district.

The MLA further said that at a time when there is shortage of power supply in Manipur, the villagers should consider themselves to get electricity from the wind-solar hybrid power project and they should take care of the project properly.

MANIREDA Director L Manglem pointed out that electricity is one of the most essential elements for the development of any place.

Unfortunately, there has been no adequate power supply in the State.

So, the absence of electricity, people have been depending on Kerosene and candle to light their houses, thus spending more expenditure.

Taking into consideration of this fact, MANIREDA provided electricity to around 200 remote villages of Manipur through harnessing of the potential of wind and solar energy, he informed, adding that steps have also been taken up for electrification of educational institutions and hospitals under Jawaharlal Nehru Solar Mission, 2020 .
