Imphal, March 06 2025:
A 1-day sale of handicraft products such as Mora seats, candles, baskets, etc made by the inmates of Manipur Central Jail, Sajiwa, Khabeisoi, was held on Thursday.
The hand-made products were inspected by N Ashok Kumar, Commissioner (Home), along with other officials of the Central Jail.
Speaking at the event, Superintendent of Central Jail, Sajiwa, SK Bhadrika (MJS) stated that the Jail Industry was started in the year 2014-15, since then, various vocational and skill development training have been given to many jail inmates.
"Section for carpentry is also in the pipeline.
Due to a smaller number of convicted prisoners and under trial prisoners (UTPs), handicraft productivity is low comparatively with other States", he added.
Emphasizing the impact of such initiatives, the Superintendent affirmed that these programmes not only help inmates reintegrate into society upon release but also provide them with livelihood opportunities, enhance creativity, and encourage innovative thinking for a better future.
Notably, hand-made products were even sold and showcased at the Sangai Festival in 2018 .
