As observed across the globe, 'World Environment Day' was celebrated across the State today under the theme "Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience" by various organisations/institutions to raise awareness on the importance of conserving, preserving and protecting the environment.
NHIDCL
The NHIDCL Regional Office in Imphal celebrated World Environment Day with great enthusiasm and commitment to the theme of "Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience".
The event featured a painting competition for school students, aiming to raise awareness and drive action towards protecting the environment and promoting sustainable practices.
At the event, Sadanand Pandey, General Manager (P), NHIDCL RO Imphal underscored the importance of land restoration and the urgent need to combat desertification & build drought resilience.
He emphasized the role of young minds in shaping a sustainable future & the importance of educating them about environmental conservation.
The painting competition saw enthusiastic participation from school students, who showcased their artistic talents and conveyed powerful messages about environmental protection through their artwork.
As part of the event, saplings of various plants and trees were also distributed to the students, encouraging them to plant these saplings in their homes or communities, fostering a connection with nature and promoting the idea of reforestation.
KHONGNANGTHABA UNIVERSITY
Khongnangthaba University under the sponsorship of the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, Government of Manipur also celebrated World Environment Day today.
The event commenced with a welcome address by Dr M Ranjeeta Devi, Faculty, School of Sciences, Khongnangthaba University.
Dr Atom Sunil Singh, Registrar, Khongnangthaba University, delivered a keynote address emphasizing the importance of collective action in addressing environmental challenges, need for land restoration efforts in Manipur and role of educational institutions like Khongnangthaba University in driving these initiatives.
Dr Johnson Luwang Wahengbam, Coordinator, Directorate of Research & Extension, Bir Tikendrajit University, Canchipur, spoke on "Harnessing Natural Resources for Environmental Sustainability".
Chief guest of the programme, Prof Naorem Joykumar Singh, Vice Chancellor of Khongnangthaba University, highlighted the human-induced environmental destruction and stressed that recent flooding issues in Manipur are man-made rather than natural occurrences.
Dr A Guneshwor Sharma, Dean and Director of AYUSH, Khongnangthaba University, presided over the event.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr P Jugeshor Singh, Faculty, School of Social Sciences and Humanities, Khongnangthaba University.
PRAVABATI COLLEGE
World Environment ,Day was also celebrated today by the Department of Environmental Science and IQAC, Pravabati College, Mayang Imphal in collaboration with Sangai Eco Club, CT Hr Sec School, Mayang Imphal Bazar.
As part of the celebration, tree saplings were planted in and around the college campus and Brave Boys Association (BBA) ground by members of GB, principal, teaching & non-teaching staff and students.
CENTRAL BUREAU OF COMMUNICATION
Central Bureau of Communication (CBC), Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India, Regional Office, Imphal also celebrated World Environment Day by organising an Integrated Communication and Outreach Programme (ICOP) at its auditorium in Imphal today.
The celebration was presided by Dr Engam Pame, IIS, Director, PIB, Imphal, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India.
Presentation of theme-based songs and a choreography on conservation of forest by the departmental troupe of the CBC, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India, Regional Office, Imphal and plantation of tree saplings were the main highlights of the event.
SFD
On the occasion of World Environment Day, Students For Development (SFD) took proactive steps towards environmental sustainability by organising a massive tree plantation initiative across various districts and educational institutions.
With a collective effort, over 500 trees were planted and distributed across Thoubal, Imphal West, and Imphal East districts, reaching educational institutions such as NIELIT, Government Polytechnic, MTU, Modem College, Thoubal College, Waikhom Mani Girls College, GP College and CIPET.
State SFD in-charge L Kamei and State SFD coordinator Swamidas Maimom; CIPET Director, Imo Thiyam along with 20 teachers and 130 students actively participated in the tree planting activities.
CRPF
As part of World Environment Day celebration, 69 Bn CRPF organised a mass plantation drive at Battalion Headquarter, Mantripukhri, Imphal today.
Officers, SOs and Jawans of the Unit led by SA Rojan Zimik, Commandant, planted about 1000 saplings during the mass plantation drive.
The mass plantation drive was carried out using "Miyawaki method" which creates sustainable forest in small areas.
All unit personnel also took the solemn pledge to take care of plants and contribute to the creation of a greener world.
ASSAM RIFLES
Mantripukhri Battalion under the aegis of IGAR (South) also organised a tree plantation drive in collaboration with Rainbow Foundation on the occasion of World Environment Day at COB Singjamei today.
A total of 30 troops & locals of Singjamei Chingamakha along with Yumnam Khemchand, Minister MAHUD and RD & PR participated in the event in which 100 saplings of different varieties were planted.
IIE
World Environment Day was also celebrated today by the IQAC of Ibotombi Institute of Education (IIE), Kha-Naorem Leikai, Imphal.
It was attended by Dr RK Bijen Singh, Principal, IIE; Victoria Thokchom, Vice Principal, IIE and Naorem Ingochouba Singh, Coordinator, IQAC as presidium members.
As part of the commemoration, a thought-provoking brainstorming session was also conducted to explore innovative strategies to restore land, combat desertification, and enhance drought resilience.
IBSD
The Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development (IBSD) also celebrated World Environment Day by organising a programme on the theme, "Preserving Bioresources of NER for Sustainable Development" at Imphal.
Prof Pulok Kumar Mukherjee, Director, IBSD; Hrishikesh Konthoujam, National team leader, GFA Consulting Group, Imphal; RK Amarjit Singh, Conservator of Forest, Special Secretary, Government of Manipur; Kh Hitler Singh, DFO, Forest Department; Moirangthem Loyangamba, founder, Wildlife and Habitat Protection, Langolpunshilok, Imphal and Dr Pardeep Bhardwaj, Scientist, IBSD spoke on the occasion.
The programme was attended by faculties, scientists, scholars of IBSD, Imphal and other organisations and staff from State Departments.
Likewise, District Health Mission Society, Imphal West in collaboration with Urban Health & Wellness Center, Uripok also celebrated World Environment Day at Uripok Haobam Dewan Leikai today.
It was attended by Dr S Sanaibema, District Nodal Officer, Climate Change; Dr L Joykumar Singh, CMO Imphal West; RK Bushosana, District Program Manager, Imphal West and Dr L Rajshree as presidium members.
