Imphal, April 04 2026:
Prior to Narendra Modi's scheduled visit to Assam on April 6, the United Naga Council (UNC) has submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister, drawing his attention to "infiltration of illegal immigrants in North East India" .
"While we appreciate your vocal stance on this issue [illegal immigration] during your visits to Assam, we are concerned about the perceived silence on this matter when you visit other North East States, particularly Manipur," UNC said in its memorandum.
It said a uniform approach is essential to address the issue of illegal immigration, which affects the demographic balance and poses a threat to the identity and rights of indigenous communities across the region.
The influx of illegal immigrants has significant demographic, social, and economic implications for the people of Manipur and the entire North East region.
It poses challenges during census and delimitation process and could alter the representation of indigenous communities in the region, UNC said.
Urging the PM for intervention, UNC said, the Government should implement a viable mechanism to check the influx of illegal immigrants like updating the NRC and constitution of a Population Commission.
It urged the PM for assurance of action during his visit to Assam on April 6 .
