March 31 IDP resettlement deadline 'impossible', says Kangpokpi IDP body

Kangpokpi, February 02 2026: Terming the March 31, 2026 deadline for resettlement of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) as unrealistic and impractical, the Kangpokpi District Internally Displaced Welfare Committee (KDIDWC) has said that the absence of basic infrastructure makes any such move impossible.

In a statement, the committee said the Chief Secretary's announcement was surprising as the proposed resettlement areas lack schools, hospitals, and motorable roads, leaving displaced families with no viable conditions to return.

The KDIDWC demanded that the Government immediately prioritise the construction of lifeline roads to key areas including Kangchup, Phailengmol (Island Block), Khamenlok, and Chingdai, stating that road connectivity is fundamental to resettlement.

Raising concerns over rehabilitation assistance, the committee said the Rs 3 lakh allocation under SPMAY-G is grossly inadequate for construction of houses and must be revised to allow IDPs to rebuild their homes with dignity.

The committee also demanded the release of damage assessment forms, payment of compensation for losses incurred during the crisis, and greater transparency in the resettlement process with the involvement of community leaders.

Expressing concern over the disruption of education, the KDIDWC said the "lack" of educational facilities in Kangpokpi district has severely affected IDP children, and urged the Government to allocate funds for schools and educational support.

Calling for adequate funding and a clear, time-bound resettlement roadmap, the committee stressed that IDPs are "not mere numbers but human beings deserving dignity and respect," and reaffirmed its resolve to continue advocating for their rights until concrete action is taken.
