National Anti-Leprosy Day: Sparsh Leprosy Campaign kicked off

In observance of National Anti Leprosy Day 2026, District Health Society Thoubal in association with National Leprosy Eradication Programme (NLEP), Thoubal Unit kicked off the Sparsh Leprosy Campaign 2026 and Anti Leprosy Fortnight at Lilong Primary Health Centre yesterday.
The event was graced by Dr Y Nokul, Chief Medical Officer, Thoubal; Keisham Premita, physiotherapist, District Leprosy Unit and Lilong Primary Health Centre, MO in-charge, Dr Rupachandra, and Dr Brojen as presidium members.
Under the theme of "Ending Discrimination, Ensuring Dignity", Speaking as the chief guest CMO Dr Y Nokul said with timely detection and medical intervention, leprosy can be cured easily.
In the past, there was intense social stigma associated with leprosy.
Patients kept the disease hidden as it Was considered the outcome of many "sins".
As a result, many afflicted individuals lost their lives and were rendered physically disabled.
With advancements in medical science, leprosy is now curable.
Anyone with suspicious symptoms should get tested at the nearest hospital, he advised.
Physiotherapist Keisham Premita said while the WHO is targeting the elimination of leprosy by 2030, India's goal is to stop leprosy transmission and zero new cases by 2027, three years earlier.
She sought the public's support and cooperation to realise the Government's goal.
Simple gifts were presented to cured leprosy patients at the program.
