Imphal, July 30 2024: A potentially catastrophic train accident was averted in Noney district today, said PIB (Defence Wing) .

The PIB (Defence Wing), in a statement, said that a goods train, comprising 21 wagons carrying rice was en-route to Khongsang station in the Noney district of Manipur, when heavy rain in the early hours today washed away the crushed stone, that supports the tracks, between T-14 P2 and T-15 P1 .

This damage posed a significant risk of track instability and misalignment, it added.

Saying that soldiers of the Territorial Army deployed along Jiribam to Khongsang railway line identified the damage and promptly alerted authorities about the impending danger, it maintained that the incoming goods train was stopped at Kambiron by the Army personnel.

The timely intervention by the Territorial Army prevented what could have been a major train accident, it said and maintained that Territorial Army is deployed along this stretch of the railway line to provide security for the under-construction mega railway project linking Jiribam to Imphal.
