Repeated attacks raise serious security concerns: NWU

Senapati, September 29 2026: The Naga Women's Union has stated that the repeated attacks by Kuki armed groups against indigenous communities pose a grave and continuing threat to the safety, stability and security of Manipur.

In a statement, the NWU cited the killings of four civilians at Pilong in Kamjong district on September 24, and the subsequent killing of three others at Kailenjang on September 26 .

The latter incident occurred shortly after the tripartite talks involving the United Naga Council (UNC) and the Governments of Manipur and India were held in Guwahati on September 26, the NWU said.

It also noted that the incident occurred around the time of the arrival of the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister in Senapati district.

The NWU emphasised that the conflict in Manipur cannot be understood or addressed merely as a conventional ethnic conflict.

Had the crisis been driven solely by ethnic antagonism, it could have been resolved much earlier, it said.

The crisis has also been compounded by governance failures and inadequate accountability, the NWU alleged, referring to the reported abduction of 21 Naga civilians from Shangkai Kuki village on March 11, 2026, the reported hostage-taking of 18 civilians, including women and a child, on May 13, and other killings and abuses against civilians.

Had the Government taken serious and appropriate action against those responsible, the situation could have been brought under control, it said.

It urged the authorities to respond to threats and acts of violence without considering the affiliation of those responsible and without further delay.
