Imphal, August 27 2026:
An amount exceeding Rs 4 crore sanctioned for payment of land compensation has been allegedly swindled.
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club here today, Hills Land Ownership and Compensation Demand Association secretary Aphuna Gangmei said that the PWD undertook a project of widening Old Cachar Road, aka Tongjei Maril and the project was funded by the NEC .
The project affected 10 villages namely; Joujangtek, Gangluan, Gahtao, Lubanglong, Bwanruang Taudaizang Nungsai, Luwanglong Khunou, Khoupum valley, Ragailong and Rengpang.
An amount exceeding Rs 5 crore was sanctioned on March 25, 2021 for payment of compensation to land owners and the amount was deposited with the PWD .
But the same amount was withdrawn by five individuals fraudulently without giving any information to the affected villagers and village chiefs, Aphuna Gangmei alleged.
He alleged that the then EE/NEC-II, PWD swindled the amount in cahoots with Thaitangam Riamei s/o Langmei Riamei of Soubunglong village, Khoupum, John Dangmei s/o late Kadunlong Dangmei of Luwanglong village, Ashing Kamei s/o Gaithaodimpou Kamei of Gangluan village and Dimdaipou Thaimei s/o Poubidim Thaimei of Gangluan village.
They distributed just Rs 79 lakh to the affected land owners, he said.
The amount was withdrawn through an Axis Bank branch at Paona Bazar, he said.
He appealed to the authorities to look into the matter and see that the affected land owners get their due compensation.
He also demanded necessary legal action against the five individuals involved in swindling the compensation amount.
He said they have lodged a complaint with the DGP (Anti Corruption Cell) regarding the matter.
