The State Government has decided to give Rs 10 lakh incentive award each to pugilists MC Mary Kom and L Sarita Devi for their gold medal winning feats in the just concluded 6th Asian Women Boxing Championships in Mongolia.
The State Cabinet that met last night with Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh in the chair adopted the decision to give the cash incentive award to the two gold winners.
"Recognizing their extra-ordinary performance in the championship, the Cabinet resolved to honour them with the incentive awards," Ibobi Singh told reporters at the headquarters of the Red Shied Division at Leimakhong here today.
India rode the two gold medals won by MC Mary Kom and L Sarita Devi to clinch the overall second spot behind China in the championship.
India finished with two gold medals, four silver and two bronze to clinch the second spot, behind China.
Five time World Boxing champion MC Mary won the gold in the 51 Kg category while L Sarita Devi came out top in the 60 Kg category.
Mother of two, Mary beat the current world champion Ren Cancan of China 14-8 while L Sarita Devi defeated Chorieva Mavzuna of Tajkistan 16-9 .
The 6th Asian Women Boxing Championship was a preparatory event for the Olympic qualifying tournament-the AIBA World Championship to be held from May 9 to 20 at China.
