Imphal, February 27 2025:
In an incident that was as heartbreaking as it was horrific, a 49 year old man allegedly thrashed his step son to death at Lamlai Nongada Makha Leikai and didn't allow the mother to bid farewell to her son during the funeral.
Babayaidutta (18) was allegedly beaten to death by his step father Khongbantabam Kinan, a resident of Lamlai Nongada Makha Leikai on February 19, according to Aribam Somi (42) of Nagamapal Kangjabi who is the second wife of Kinan.
The funeral rites for the young victim were conducted in a poignant and somber atmosphere, marked by a heartbreaking absence of the victim's mother who was reportedly denied permission to attend.
Kinan reportedly initiated a relationship with Somi when he was working as a driver and residing in a rented room at Nagamapal Kangjabi.
At present, Kinan earns a living by collecting and selling wood.
Somi, on the other hand, used to run a small pan shop at Nongada to help her family.
Babayaidutta was born to Somi while she was married to a non-local individual at the time.
According to Somi, Kinan took her as his second wife in 2018 while she was living at Nagamapal Kangjabi.
Kinan agreed to look after her two children (one boy and a girl) before they got married, according to Somi.
The couple has a three year old together.
The first wife of Kinan is a tribal woman and they are parents to three daughters.
Kinan's first wife has a mobility issue.
Addressing the media at Nagampal in this regard today, Somi said that her son died due to an injury on his head after he was beaten black and blue by her husband.
She said that her son bled from his ear and nose due to the assault.
Claiming that no one intervened to stop the assault on her son, Somi alleged that she was also assaulted by Kinan after snatching her phone.
Somi alleged that she sought help from the Lamlai police to intervene in the assault, but her pleas were ignored, attributing the incident to a "family problem" .
Somi alleged that she had reached out to the police multiple times in the past for help, but instead of taking action, they advised her to approach local clubs or meira paibi groups for assistance.
Somi went on to claim that she visited the residence of local MLA Kh Ibomcha, only to find him absent.
Saying that she requested assistance from the Border Security Force (BSF) personnel stationed at the MLA's residence, Somi claimed that her in-laws, however, intervened to dismiss her pleas by claiming it was merely a "family problem" .
Somi recounted that she and her daughter hired a two wheeler vehicle from an acquaintance and rushed Babayaidutta to Sawombung hospital for medical attention.
Saying that her son tragically succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, Somi alleged that her in-laws initially didn't allow her to perform the last rites and cremate her son at Lamlai Nongada.
Continuing that she took her son's corpse to Nagamapal for cremation with her sister in law, Somi maintained that she was told to bring back the body to Nongada for cremation when she reached Chingarel.
In a heartbreaking revelation, Somi shared that she was denied the opportunity to pay her last respects to her son by her husband and in-laws.
She was not permitted to offer even a single flower petal, nor was she allowed to light the pyre.
Further claiming that she was kept locked inside a room by her husband after the death of her son, Somi added that she and her daughter from the previous relationship were rescued by her family members on February 23 .
Claiming that she and her children were harassed by Kinan, she urged the relevant authority to imprison her husband for lifetime.
