Thoubal, February 26 2025:
The incidents of violence and instability prevailing in Manipur are a result of violation of human rights enshrined in the Constitution and undermining the principles of democracy, said Keisham Meghachandra, president, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) .
The Wangkhem AC MLA made the statement while kicking off the Samvidhan Bachao Rashtriya Padayatra Jai Bapu, Jai Bhim, Jai Samvidhan campaign at a public ground near Lilong Haoreibi Makha Leikai CHC.
The inaugural event was organised by the Lilong Block Congress Committee.
Addressing the gathering, K Meghachandra asserted that certain individuals have been harassed, intimidated and arrested by the police for saying or publishing their personal opinions, which is in violation of their freedom of speech and expression.
With the coming of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Government and subsequent double-engine Government in some States, the State Government's functioning has been limited.
The existence of a Government which bent to every command from the Modi-Shah duo has led Manipur to her current unfortunate state.
In terms of development, Manipur has regressed by thirty years, he said.
The MPPC president also laid blame for the turmoil in Manipur to the misadministration of the State by three leaders- the Prime Minister, Home Minister and former Chief Minister.
Stating that the three leaders failed to take appropriate action at the right time, he asserted that they should be held accountable for the strife in Manipur.
On another note, he said that the campaign which kicked off at Lilong AC will reach different Constituencies of the State.
The campaign seeks to bring the Manipur crisis to the attention of all people and has been carried out in different parts of the country under the All India Congress Committee, he added.
Stressing on the hardships faced by the people of Manipur, he said that violating the rights of the public is a direct affront to the Indian Constitution.
This is clearly shown by the fact that people cannot venture out to Moreh, Churachandpur and other places and they cannot travel along the Imphal-Dimapur Road, he maintained.
Adding that letting victims of the conflict fester in relief camps for over 21 months is against the law, he further said that the Government did not agree to convene an all political party meeting, which subsequently led to the current situation.
Congress Legislative Party (CLP) leader and former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi accused the BJP of disrespecting Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar and the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi which is akin to disrespecting the Constitution.
Urging people to follow the path of truth, he said that the campaign seeks to bring awareness among the people to safeguard the Constitution and democracy.
The inaugural event was also graced by S Bidyapati, vice-president, MPCC; Soibam Jiten, general secretary, MPCC; Ningombam Bhupenda Meitei, spokesperson, MPCC; MPYCC president; Lilong Block Congress Committee president, executive members, DCC and BCC members and volunteers of Mahila Mandal.
