Ukhrul, September 25 2010:
Concerned over the dilapidated condition of Ukhrul town road, the Phungreitang East locality has voluntarily initiated a mass sanitation and cleaning work from DC office to Gandhi Chowk recently.
The social work has drawn to a close now.
Hundreds of people took part in the cleanliness drive which covered filling pot holes and cleaning drainages which have remained stagnant for a long time.
Earlier during an inspection tour, the Ukhrul Students' Union found the Public Works Department (PWD) of Ukhrul sleeping over the pathetic conditions of the only road of Ukhrul which runs through the heart of the district headquarters.
With the PWD not taking note of the sufferings and inconveniences faced by the public, the student body has charged that the said department exists only in name with hardly any work being done on the ground.

Although crores of money have been pumped in for road constructions/maintenance in Ukhrul district, the public are yet to see any improvement.
The records are exhaustive and the contents in an official documents have detailed the amount sanctioned for each financial year under the SPA.
However, the PWD, in an order dated March 20, 2010 shows it has provisions for only Rs 86.88,489 which is a huge climb down from the earlier amount sanctioned under SPA of 2008-09 .
On the other hand, for improvement of Western Circular road in Ukhrul with provision of BMW & PC surfacing from the portion from 3.05 to 6.25 Kms, the original amount sanctioned was pegged at Rs 2.6 crores was found slashed to Rs 74,35,537 .
Taking all the loopholes into consideration, the student body has appealed to the authority concerned to look into the mater with the seriousness it deserves before things take an ugly turn.
Meanwhile, people of Phungreitang East have also strongly warned the authority concerned to address the matter with immediately and seriously.
