On the occasion of Khongjom Day, Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla has paid humble tributes to the brave sons of Manipur who laid down their lives in the historic Anglo-Manipur War of 1891.In a message, the Governor said Khongjom Day (April 23) stands as a symbol of the indomitable courage, patriotism, and unwavering spirit of Manipuri forefathers.
Their supreme sacrifice at the battlefield of Khongjom continues to inspire everyone and serves as a reminder of the price of freedom and dignity, he said.
Commemorating this historic day, Governor Bhalla urged people to reaffirm their commitment to uphold the ideals for which these heroes fought and carry forward their legacy by fostering unity, strengthening the fabric of society, and contributing towards the peace, progress, and development of the State and the Nation.
Paying homage to the valiant heroes of the Anglo-Manipuri War of 1891, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand extended Khongjom Day greetings to the people of Manipur.
In his message, the Chief Minister said brave forefathers of Manipur- Major Paona Brajabashi, Major Chongtham Mia, Chinglen Sana, Khumbong Major, Loitongba Jamadar, Keisa Jamadar, Heirang Khongja, and many others who stood strongly against the imperial might of the British Army in 1891 are all epitomes of patriotism and bravery.
Saying that challenges continue to "rise against us" even today in many forms: both from within and from outside, Yumnam Khemchand asserted that these challenges can take down entire societies unless tackled successfully on time.
Offering homage to the valiant heroes, Manipur Legislative Assembly Speaker Th Satyabrata Singh expressed hope that their memory would help guide in creating harmony and fostering the spirit of resilience among Manipuri people.
"Let Khongjom Day be a beacon of inspiration for all, reminding us that the sacrifices of the past are the foundation of our future", said the Speaker.
Joining in, Mayang Imphal AC MLA K Robindro paid his respects to the immortal martyrs of the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891 who chose death over dishonour.
Highlighting the brave forefathers who came from different backgrounds but united in the defence of Manipur, the MLA said everyone should preserve the social fabric of the State with the same dedication.
He reaffirmed his commitment to the peace, prosperity, and territorial integrity of Manipur and urged people to draw strength from the soil of Khongjom to build a Manipur that is strong, harmonious and resilient and pledge to work for the progress of Manipur.
