The North East Students' Organisation (NESO) has urged the Union Home Minister to award capital punishment to the perpetrators of the crime relating to the death of Nido Taniam, a student from Arunachal Pradesh who was re-portedly beaten to death in New Delhi on Jan 29 .
NESO has placed a six-point demand to the Home Minister for immediate necessary action by the appropriate authorities which could give mental, social and physical security to the students and people of the North Eastern region studying and residing in Delhi and other parts of India against the backdrop of recent incident in Delhi.
Highlighting that incidents of assaults, molestation on NE people are happening on a frequent basis resulting in a feeling of insecurity especially of the women folk�which has been amplified by the assault on two Manipuri women, rape of one minor girl from Manipur at Munirka on Feb 8, physical assault of two Manipur boys on Feb 10, the NESO strongly demanded enactment of stringent law against racial discrimination as Anti-Racism Act.
Stringent action against the police personnel for failure to register case; inclusion of the North East - its geographical location, its people, its culture, its ethos etc � in the syllabus of schools under all State Boards and Central Boards including the CBSE; setting up of at least one Special Police Station for dealing with cases related to racial discrimination and atrocities on NE people, with a provision that it is manned by police officers from NE states and to make one time recruitment policy for at least 5000 Delhi police personnel in the respective capitals of 8 NE States are among other demands raised by the NESO.
The memo also said that despite the assurance given by Prime Minister office on Nov 15, 2009 that he had directed the concerned authorities to take stern action against the culprits and to take special measures for the physical security of the North East Students, crimes against the students from North East States continues.
