Imphal, January 20:
Contending that Henkholen Haokip s/o Khupthong Haokip of S Mongjang village under Saikul police station shot dead by Imphal West commandos at Khuman Lampak was an innocent civilian, the Kuki Movement for Human Rights (KUMUR) has demanded a judicial enquiry into the killing.
In a memorandum submitted to the Chief Minister in-charge, KUMUR also demanded suspension of the guilty commando personnel and compensation to the family of the victim.
Stating that after a cross investigation of the family members, local villagers and friends of the victim jointly conducted by the KUMUR and the Kuki Students' Organisation, it was established that Henkholen Haokip was a law abiding citizen, always involved in church and community services and never involved in any unlawful activity.
After a thorough investigation, it is also learnt that on the fateful day (January 18), Henkholen's elder brother came from his village to procure medicine for their ailing mother.
After procuring medicines, his brother left him at his rented house at Haokip Veng, Imphal at around 4.30 pm.
Thereafter Henkholen waited for his sister to visit his ailing mother together at his village in the same evening.
However, as his sister didn't turn up, Henkholen told his neighbour to prepare dinner for him and he went out to buy some vegetables in the market.
But he never returned back and it was learnt from newspaper reports in the next morning that Henkholen had been shot dead by commandos, recounted the KUMUR.
Citing first-hand accounts given by the family of the victim, the KUMUR alleged that Henkholen was shot dead in cold blood in blatant violation of human rights and the right to life guaranteed by the Constitution of India.
Moreover, a joint meeting of the KUMUR and the KSO has resolved not to claim the body of late Henkholen until the Government authority comes to an amicable solution, maintained the human rights body.
It further warned that failure to fulfil the demands by 12 noon of January 21 will result in agitation of all different sorts.
