Imphal, September 19: In solidarity with the cause of the people for complete withdrawal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958 from the State, BS Damodara Swami, president of Bhaktivedanta Institute has written to the President APJ Abdul Kalam for conceding to the demand of the people.

In a letter, Damodara said that he was deeply shocked to see the painful situation inflicted upon the women and children of Manipur by the Act, imposed in the State since 1961.The long history of pains and suffering inflicted upon the people rather than protecting them has culminated in the pre-sent ongoing agitation, he said.

What has been seen in Manipur is that this Act has caused the enhancement of the militancy in the State, he said, and suggested a proper platform for dialogue for understanding the problems of the people would be the most desirable way to deal with the burning situation of the State.

Damodara also requested the President for paying a visit to the State and said that this could help to heal the deep wound in the sentiments of the people.

Body reacts: Reaction Chief of Army staff General NC Vij�s assertion that Thangjam Manorama was not raped, Thangmeiband Women�s Organization, Khoyathong Polem Leikai has asked if that was really so why did the accused AR personnel hesitated from giving their statement before the enquiry commission probing into the case.

The women�s body also denounced Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh for not being able to protect the people from the excesses of the security personnel.

Meanwhile, Meira paibis belonging to 25 organizations of Laikhong and Nongpok Keithelmanbi have resolved to extend their unstinted support to the ongoing public agitation until and unless the AFSPA is lifted from the State during a joint meeting today.
