Centre looks to harvest rainwater in big way

Imphal, June 19 2019: As a part of its plan to store rainwater on a large scale all over the country, the Central Government the State Government to submit a case study of all the works taken up under MGNREGS related to water harvesting.

According to an official source, the Rural Development Ministry sent instructions to Manipur and other States on May 27 and June 12, directing them to conduct necessary case studies on some of the major water harvesting works taken up under the MGNREGS and to submit them to the Ministry.

Based on the Ministry's instruction, the State Rural Development has also sent necessary instructions to the MGNREGS District Programme Coordinators/DCs concerning the same, the source added.

The source explained that the Ministry instructed the North Eastern States, including Manipur, to conduct case studies on 5 major water harvesting works taken up under MGNREGS and to submit it to the Ministry.

However, for other States, case studies on 15 projects have to be submitted, the source explained, adding that the last date for submission of the report is June 25 .

The source conveyed that in this regard, the various officials of the States concerned and the officials of the Ministry held a video conference on June 12 and during the meeting, the Ministry explained that the Central Government, based on the Prime Minister's vision, will begin giving more emphasis on the attempt to store rain water in all parts of the country.

The Ministry also directed the authorities concerned to send at least 6 photos of each project as well as a 5 minute long video along with the report, the source added.

The case studies, which will be submitted to the Ministry, will contain various details and information like the Gram Panchayat/village concerned, difficulties and hurdles faced during the work, who the implementing agency is and what positive change have the projects brought to the people etc which will be collected personally from the beneficiaries.

After the reports are received, the Ministry will send technical teams to supervise and inspect the projects again, the source mentioned, adding that the case studies sought by the Ministry are mainly regarding those projects which were taken up during 2018-19 .
