COCOMI students wing has urged the Government to terminate the police personnel involved in killing one Laishram Prem, a teenager, at Salungpham on December 14 and to release the six 'village volunteers' who were arrested.
Addressing a press conference at Kwakeithel today, Chungkham Bidyananda, media coordinator of COCOMI student's wing, said that Prem who hailed from Thoubal Khunou and studied at Nimaichand Keinya High School was to appear in the upcoming HSLC examination.
Saying that Prem was also a village volunteer, he claimed that the student was detained, shot at and killed by police for not stopping his vehicle when the police told him to do so.
Further stating that the killing of Prem has freshly reminded people of the many cases of fake encounters which happened in Manipur, Bidyananda added that the COCOMI student's wing condemns the alleged excesses of the police in the strongest terms.
Six 'village volunteers' were also arrested on the said day (December 14), he continued.
Continuing that several youths came out to defend Meetei villages from the onslaught of Kuki narco terrorists and their associates as the Government failed to protectlives and properties of the people, he added that village volunteers would not have made an appearance had the Government done their job.
Police personnel involved in killing Prem should be terminated, he urged while also demanding unconditional release of the six 'village volunteers' arrested by police.
People know it is the village volunteers who have been playing a key role in protecting Meetei villages from the onslaught of Kuki narco-terrorists, he said while asking what the Government has done to stop the atrocity against the Meeteis in the last 19 months.
Cracking down on village volunteers would invite a series of massive public agitations, he said and asked the police to exercise their authority in hill districts too and on protecting the lives and properties of the people.
