Imphal, June 16 2011:
A political worker/supporter of Works Minister K Ranjit has been hacked to death by a group of men led by a Gram Panchayat Member.
The incident took place at Chairel Lamkhai Pangaltabi Awang Leikai under Sugnu Assembly Constituency in Thoubal district at about 8.30 pm yesterday.
Moirangthem Shamo (54) of Wangjing Khunou Wangoo Lamkhai, who is a known political supporter of Works Minister K Ranjit was hacked by a group of men led by Chairel Gram Panchayat Ward No 1 Member Nongmaithem Iboton (64) inflicting critical injuries.
Even as injured Shamo was being taken to a hospital at Imphal, Iboton and his cohorts blocked the way, said Shamo's son Surjit (28) .
Shamo succumbed to the injuries on the way.
Marks of fatal wounds made by sharp weapons were seen on different parts of Shamo's body.
It is reported that Surjit was also assaulted by Iboton and his cohorts using swords in the morning of June 14 .
As he sustained injuries on the head, Surjit was treated at JNIMS.
Though it could not be ascertained what sparked the fatal assault, it is suspected that the bloody assault might be connected to the next Assembly elections.
Family members have claimed the corpse of Shamo after post mortem at JNIMS today.
Earlier, the family members and the local people decided not to claim the corpse until GP Member Iboton is not handed over to public.
However, they relaxed their stance after Works Minister K Ranjit personally came to JNIMS and informed the bereaved family and the anguished people that some of the accused have
been apprehended.
