Indo-Russian cultural meet kicks off

Imphal, December 14 2013 : A week long cultural exchange pro-gramme between India and Russia christened 'Culture for Friendship and Cooperation' was kick-started today at MFDC auditorium under the joint aegis of Manipur Film Development Corporation (MFDC) and the Russian Centre for Science and Culture, Kolkata.

The opening function held this afternoon was graced by Chief Okram Ibobi as chief guest, Russian Federation Consul General, Kolkata Irina K Bashkirova, Director Russian Centre for Science and Culture, Kolkata Alexander V Mazirka as special guests and former Art and Culture Minister Dr M Nara as president.

Speaking at the opening function, Irina K Bashkirova said that India and Russia share a strong relationship and it dates back to 15th century.

"The friendship we established is cherished till now", Irina said.

It is the respect for one's culture, mutual trust and mutual respect that makes the Indo-Russian friendship uni-que and lasting, she said.

In his address, Dr Alexander conveyed gratitude to Chief Minister O Ibobi, Dr Nara and the organising committee for making the progra-mme a success.

The program- me would help in strengthening cultural ties between Rus- sia and Manipur, he added.

Extending warm welcome to the Russian delegates, Chief Minister O Ibobi said, "It is not only culture and sports which bring people to-gether but mutual trust and respect are also key elements" .

Noting that the friendship shared between Russia and India is a time tested one, Ibobi stated that this unique friendship should be preserved and promoted.

Dr Nara said that the deep rooted friendship shared between the two countries would open great opportunities in the changing world.

It is the perfect time, particularly for Manipur to explore other people's culture.

The bilateral ties would be strengthened all the more with the opening of a Russian language class at Slopeland Public School, Khongjom.

The opening function was attended by high ranking officials, film personalities and art and culture exponents and enthusiasts.

Two Russian do-cumentary films Sochi-Da and Poems on Ice and Mani-puri feature film Nangna Kappa Pakchade were screened after the formal opening function.
