Pambei-led UNLF observes Manipur Independence Day

Imphal, August 14 2026: The Pambei-led UNLF today observed the 80th Manipur Independence Day at its central headquarters.

The commemorative function was graced by the party's advisory committee president Moirangthem Nongyai and acting Chairman Thokchom Khambaton as chief guest and president respectively.

The gathering observed a two-minute silence in honour of those brave forefathers who protected the sovereignty of Manipur throughout history, conveyed a press release issued by the outfit's Department of Publicity and Education, Secretary Charairongba Thokchom.

Speakers who addressed the gathering highlighted the significance of August 14, 1947 .

It was on this day that the British rulers handed over the sovereignty of Manipur to Maharaj Bodhchandra after which the king went to Kangla, pulled down the Union Jack and hoisted the Manipuri National flag, they recalled.

They pointed out that Manipur achieved its independence one day before India did.

Soon after, Manipur took the path of a modern Nation by adopting the Constitutional monarchy system and thus occupied a prominent place in the history of the entire South East Asia, they said.

The historical significance of August 14, 1947 is a great leverage in the ongoing ceasefire and political dialogue between the outfit and the Government of India, they said.
