Five robbed, assaulted

Imphal, August 14 2024:
Five persons, all drivers and handymen, coming in 3 trucks were beaten and robbed by armed persons at Kakching district early morning today.
The incident happened at Umathel Leingang Ching Lamkhai area at around 3.30 am.
The five occupants of the trucks have been identified as Md Sultan of Thoubal Moijing, Md Ithemba of Yairipok Sikhong, Md Amir Khan of Lilong Chingjao, Md Sajid Khan of Thoubal Moijing and Md Sukur of Mayang Imphal Bazar.
Speaking to reporters at Lilong Dam Makhong today, one of the drivers, Md Sajid said the five of them were travelling in 3 trucks towards Imphal when they were stopped at Umathel Leingang Ching Lamkhai area by at least 10 well armed persons dressed in combat uniforms.
Sajid said the armed men demanded Rs 30,000 from each vehicle.
When they told them that they didn't have the money with them, the armed men paraded them at gunpoint and robbed them of their mobile phones and money, Sajid said.
While the armed men robbed them of Rs 5000 in cash, they were forced to transfer Rs 15,000 via G-Pay, Sajid said.
Deeply disturbed by the incident, the United Meitei Pangal Committee Manipur has strongly condemned the incident.
The committee's organisation secretary, Moulana Habibullah Sheikh said the individuals/groups concerned should clarify on the incident within 24 hours.
He urged the police and "those who stand for truth" to investigate the incident and take action against the miscreants.
Such assault on drivers may force transporters to cease work, he added.
